Dianhong: a legend of tea industry born out of an anti-Japanese war

Yunnan black tea, also known as "Dian Hong," has a relatively short history but a legendary and dramatic tale. It boasts a rich and robust flavor, yet remains sweet, mellow, and approachable.

Unlike famous teas that have been around for hundreds of years, Dian Hong is a "post-80s" product, whose creation is closely tied to the fate of the nation.

In Yunnan, tea knowledge lags far behind the industry. When it comes to the tea sector, tea itself is the primary language, water is the secondary language, and utensils are the tertiary language. Writing and video are merely the quaternary languages.

Tea leaves are not merely a simple leaf for quenching thirst; they also symbolize health and cultivation, gender equality, and spiritual joy.

Some say that black tea is the drink of the nobility. Among them, Yunnan black tea stands out, fitting for grand halls as well as humble households. It is not only the favorite of the British royal family but also the officially designated ceremonial tea for diplomatic occasions, and a common household staple for entertaining guests.

1. Time: 1938, during the Anti-Japanese War, traditional tea-producing regions faced export blockades.

2. Key figure: Tea master Feng Shaoqiu, also known as the "Father of Dian Hong," who revolutionized China's history of using only small-leaf tea varieties for black tea production.

3. Key Event: Feng Shaoqiu discovered in Fengqing (formerly known as Shunning) in Yunnan that the large-leaf tea variety had plump leaves and abundant internal substances, leading him to personally create the first batch of Dian Hong (Yunnan black tea). This tea was exported through Hong Kong, renowned internationally for its "beautiful shape, vibrant color, rich aroma, and strong flavor," earning valuable foreign exchange for the country.

Summary: Dian Hong tea was first created in 1939 by Feng Shaoqiu in Fengqing and is one of the representative "Resistance Tea" varieties.
